Anthropic has officially taken one of the biggest steps yet toward the public markets.
On October 26, the artificial intelligence company behind Claude filed its Form S-1 registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, confirming plans to list its Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker ANT. The filing does not yet disclose the number of shares to be offered or an expected IPO price range.
For one of the largest companies in the Prime Unicorn Index, the filing marks a major transition from private-market growth to public-market scrutiny, and could become one of the most closely watched technology IPOs in history.
Explosive Growth Meets Enormous Capital Requirements
Anthropic’s S-1 provides investors with a detailed look at the scale of the business for the first time.
The company generated approximately $16.3 billion of revenue during the first half of 2026, while second-quarter revenue increased more than 1,300% from the prior year. More than half of Fortune 500 companies are now Anthropic customers.
That growth has come with significant costs. Anthropic reported a first-half net loss of approximately $80.7 billion, although much of that figure resulted from a non-operating accounting adjustment related to convertible debt. Its operating loss was considerably smaller at roughly $693 million, while adjusted operating income reached approximately $1.6 billion.
The filing also highlights just how capital-intensive frontier AI has become. Anthropic has committed hundreds of billions of dollars toward AI compute and infrastructure over the coming years as it competes to build increasingly capable AI systems.
Anthropic’s financing history shows how rapidly both the size of its capital raises and its private-market valuation have expanded as the company has scaled.
From Unicorn to Public-Market Giant
Anthropic’s rise has been unusually rapid. Prime Unicorn Index data shows the company valued at approximately $674 million during its Series A financing in 2021. By its May 2026 Series H, its private-market valuation had climbed to more than $950 billion. Today, Prime Unicorn Index pricing implies a valuation of nearly $1.5 trillion, underscoring how much further Anthropic has repriced in the private market ahead of its planned IPO.
That increase does not represent a direct investor return. Capital structure, dilution, and share classes matter, but it demonstrates how dramatically a private company can reprice before ever reaching a public exchange. Anthropic’s planned IPO could now establish one of the clearest public-market benchmarks yet for frontier AI.
Why Private-Market Price Discovery Matters
Anthropic’s path toward an IPO illustrates one of the central reasons the Prime Unicorn Index exists.
Traditional public-market investors may only gain access to Anthropic after years of private funding rounds and substantial valuation growth. During that period, however, company filings, primary financings, secondary transactions, and other disclosures can provide meaningful signals about how the market is valuing the business.
The Prime Unicorn Index incorporates those signals to track private-company pricing before an IPO creates a readily observable public-market price.
Prime Unicorn Index pricing provides a more continuous view of that evolution, showing how Anthropic’s private-market share price changed between major financing events.
For investors, the broader lesson is not simply that earlier is always better. Private companies carry significant risks, valuations can move in both directions, and access often comes with limited liquidity. But Anthropic demonstrates why understanding the private market matters: by the time some of today’s most important technology companies reach an exchange, a significant portion of their growth may already have occurred.
A Major Test for the AI Market
Anthropic’s IPO will test whether public investors are willing to support the extraordinary valuations created during the current AI investment cycle while absorbing the equally extraordinary infrastructure costs required to compete.
Whatever the final offering price, Anthropic’s transition from a young private AI startup to a potential trillion-dollar public company represents a major milestone for both the AI industry and the private markets that financed its rise.
