A Changing of the Guard
For the first time since 2021, SpaceX is no longer the No. 1 ranked company in the Prime Unicorn Index.
Following a recent secondary transaction at $925 per share, a 57% increase from its prior observed price, Anthropic moved into the top position. Based on Prime Unicorn Index component data as of August 5, Anthropic carries an implied valuation of $1.50 trillion, surpassing SpaceX at $1.43 trillion. OpenAI now ranks third at $895 billion.
The move ends a remarkable run for SpaceX at the top of the Index and marks another milestone in the rapid rise of artificial intelligence across private markets.

Anthropic’s Rapid Ascent
Anthropic’s rise has accelerated dramatically in 2026.
In February, the company raised $30 billion at a $380 billion post-money valuation. Just three months later, Anthropic completed a $65 billion Series H at a $965 billion valuation, led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital. At the time, Anthropic reported that annualized run-rate revenue had surpassed $47 billion, supported by growing enterprise adoption of Claude and its AI coding products.
The latest $925 secondary transaction moves Anthropic’s implied Prime Unicorn Index valuation even higher, to approximately $1.50 trillion, more than 50% above the valuation established in its May financing.

,
That distinction matters. Primary financing rounds provide important valuation benchmarks, but they occur periodically. Secondary transactions can offer additional insight into where investors are willing to transact between those rounds, allowing shifts in market demand to become visible sooner.
From Private Markets Toward an IPO
Anthropic’s valuation surge also comes as the company prepares for a potential transition to the public markets.
On June 1, Anthropic confidentially submitted a draft registration statement for a proposed IPO. The company has not determined the number of shares to be offered or the offering price, and any listing remains dependent on market conditions and completion of the SEC review process.
An eventual IPO would put one of the largest private-market valuations ever directly in front of public investors and provide a significant test of the market’s willingness to support the valuations reached by leading AI companies.
SpaceX’s Historic Run
Anthropic’s rise does not diminish the extraordinary value creation achieved by SpaceX.
SpaceX had held the Index’s top position since 2021 and entered the public markets in June 2026 at a $1.75 trillion valuation, completing the largest IPO in history. Under Prime Unicorn Index methodology, newly public companies remain in the Index until the quarterly reconstitution following their 150th trading day, allowing their transition from private to public markets to continue being tracked.
Recent public-market volatility, however, has brought SpaceX’s valuation below its IPO level. The company reported second-quarter revenue of approximately $7.8 billion, up 92% year over year, but investors have also weighed substantial AI-related capital expenditures and increased share liquidity following its IPO.
Why the Ranking Change Matters
The changing of the guard at the top of the Prime Unicorn Index demonstrates why continuously tracking private-market valuations matters.
The leadership change at the top comes as the Prime Unicorn Index reaches new heights. On August 4, 2026, the Index closed at an all-time high of 311.3, underscoring the significant value creation taking place across the private market as companies like Anthropic continue to reshape the Index’s top ranks.

,
A funding-round valuation can become outdated as investor demand, company fundamentals, secondary transactions, and broader market conditions evolve. Anthropic’s $925 secondary transaction illustrates how quickly new price discovery can reshape the perceived value of even the largest private companies.
The significance goes beyond which company occupies the No. 1 spot. Anthropic, SpaceX, and OpenAI now sit at valuations approaching or exceeding those of some of the world’s largest public companies, reflecting how much value is being created before companies reach the public markets and throughout that transition.
For the first time in five years, there is a new name at the top of the Prime Unicorn Index, and with Anthropic moving toward a potential IPO, the race at the top may only be entering its next chapter.
